The term renewal in Islam originated from the hadith of the Prophet: Allah sends to this nation at the beginning of every century someone who will renew its religion for it. Renewing religion means returning it to what it was in its early days. This means that the religion was complete and perfect, then it began to become deficient and most of it was lost, so these renewers restored it to something close to its state in the time of the early Salaf. Some scholars also stated that renewal is only reviving knowledge, which is showing and spreading it. Some narrations of Ahmad ibn Hanbal on the hadith of renewal came with the wording teaching the religion.
